The flood and drain system works by filling the planters with water, and having this water drain out after a certain level to both prevent flooding the roots of the plants, and to have a constant cycle of nutrient-rich water to the plants. At the bottom of the shelves is a bucket that is used as a reservoir for the fertilized water, and a pump that moves the water through the system’s tubing. The system also has a series of sensors that monitor the pH levels, dissolved oxygen levels, and temperature of the water. The data from the sensors is shown on a live feed on our website and provide information to the user of the system about when they may need to clean the tubes, change the water, or add fertilizer and other nutrients to the water.
